Drug Testing

Why does CAN even need to be able to request drug tests?
CAN is a non-profit organization that simply rewards students for choosing to be drug free. If we did not have the ability to request drug tests, we would not be able to stem abuse of the system. Accountability is an essential component of all reward systems.

Does CAN drug-test all of its members?
Absolutely not. CAN believes most people are making good choices, so drug-testing everyone would be hypocritical and undermine our philosophy. Our terms of membership state that we will request a drug test only if there is reasonable suspicion pointing toward illegal drug use.

What sort of “evidence” does CAN consider before requesting a drug test?
Primarily, CAN requests a drug test after several credible reports have been made by other students or school faculty members. Note: we do NOT make rash choices when it comes to requesting drug tests. We generally will not act simply because of a one time rumor or report.

If I sign up as a CAN Member, can I be forced to take a drug test?
Not at all…if you are asked to submit to a drug test, you may simply refuse by voluntarily dropping out of CAN. If you are clean (or want to press your luck), you can take the test and prove to everyone just how wrong they are. CAN is a benefits club for people who are against illegal drug use. We are not the police.

Wait…if my kids sign up for CAN they might have to face something like a drug-test without me even knowing about it?!?
No. If there is sufficient reason to suspect a CAN member of drug involvement, CAN will first approach the parents/guardians about it. Parents can be the most effective anti-drug in the world, and we are not everyone’s parents.

What happens if I am asked to take a drug test, and it comes out positive?
Your CAN membership will be revoked. After 6 months you can petition the CAN Board to be readmitted to the program.

If I take a drug test at CAN’s request, who sees the results?
Drug test results are very sensitive and we respect your privacy. The results are known only to the faculty sponsor (currently Deb White), who shares them with you and your parents. We do not give the results to the school administration, police, or any other party.

Who performs a CAN-requested drug test?
Deb White as the CAN designee (or a physician at the request of the parent/guardian.

Does CAN try to conduct a certain number of drug tests each year? Like a quota?
No. In fact, CAN has only had to request drug tests a few times a year in the history of the program.

If I’m asked to take a drug test and decide to do it, do I have to pay for it?
No, CAN will pay for any drug test it requests. If you decide to submit to another drug test to prove/disprove our results, you will have to do so at your own expense.
