The CAN Program works for a number of reasons:
- We believe people want to make the right choice. CAN does not assume that all kids are drug-addicts, and we do not believe that anyone is hopeless. In fact, we believe most kids make good choices whether CAN exists or not: CAN is simply another of the many benefits that come with a healthy lifestyle.
- Positive peer pressure is very effective. At the very least, it’s as powerful as negative peer pressure. Because CAN is comprised almost entirely of students, our program and our message is highly visible even to those who do not want to participate as members. We have literally hundreds of good role models throughout the classrooms of Cody, inspiring growing membership daily
- CAN is run by students, not adults. Nobody understands students better than the students themselves. The CAN Board (which is responsible for most directional and financial decisions) is comprised of Cody High School students. Their perspective and direction help ensure that CAN stays relevant and effective.
- CAN promotes community. We have formed alliances with dozens of local businesses who offer special discounts and services to CAN members. In this way, the positive choices of our members are reinforced by the world around them.
